• AT&T will buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion

AT&T announced today that it is set to buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom in a cash and stock deal for a reported $39 billion. Currently, AT&T is the second largest mobile phone carrier in the United States but would easily surpass Verizon if the deal goes through. With this deal, the number of major carriers in the United States would drop from four to three.
The combined companies of AT&T and T-Mobile USA would account for a whopping 43% of the mobile phone service in the United States. There are groups that will be keeping a close eye on this acquisition but it isn't too far off from the deal that brought Alltel to Verizon back in 2009 for $5.9 billion. The deal is likely to take up to 12 months to go through. Once it does, T-Mobile USA customers will soon have legitimate access to the iPhone.
