Later today (Wednesday), the US Navy is expected to attempt to shoot down a satellite - the size of a bus - over the Pacific Ocean.

The shot may cost as much as $40 million.

One reason for the attempt is concern that there is potential for the spread of noxious fumes from combustion of the satellite's fuel if it enters the earth's atmosphere in one piece.

Here's more (http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/space/02/18/satellite.intercept/index.html)

That's amazing that they can do that! But on the other hand, they can't find Bin Laden!!!!! :)

What do y'all think? Are they telling the truth or is it all just a ruse for a test shot at a satellite?

Ahh! Another sceptic. I like that!

I'm old enough to remember the last big one that failed. Skylab. Crashed into a farmer's pasture in Western Australia.

This one is a spy satellite that failed after launch. They say they're concerned about toxic fumes from burning fuel..... maybe there's something else on board (technology) that they want to destroy in case it gets into "unfriendly" hands.? ?

Probably has one of those super, duper spy cameras like the one they used to take pictures of Sadaam in his rat hole!! :)

My guess is that it was never a "real" spy satellite at all. I think they put it up just to shoot it down.

Yeah, I remember skylab, too. I had forgotten where it had fallen, though.

I, too, think it was a practice shot! ;)
